    date paste recipe

Date paste is made without stripping away the fiber and nutrients, which makes it a healthy alternative to processed sugars and sweeteners.

This date-paste recipe can be used to naturally sweeten recipes, like baked goods, beverages (like coffee, lattes, and hot cocoa), or sauces that call for a sweetener.

Date paste can also be used as a syrup replacement for pancakes or waffles or as a dip for apples - almost like a caramel sauce.

This sweet and all-natural date paste recipe is used in our going plant-based guide to sweeten recipes, like zucchini muffins, and pumpkin sticky toffee pudding. It can also be used as a sweet topping to add to waffles or french toast or try this date-sweetened caramel sauce recipe.

    Health Benefits

Date paste is made with two simple ingredients, dates and water. Dates are a good source of minerals and vitamins. They also are a good source of fiber and promote good gut health. Dates also help regulate blood sugar and are a good source of antioxidants. Read more about the health benefits of dates.

    Ingredients

All you need to make date paste is 2 ingredients!

    • dates, medjool or deglets
    • filtered water

Optional add-ins to enhance this date paste recipe:

    • ground cinnamon
    • vanilla extract

See the recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

In a small pot on the stovetop lightly boil the water.

Using hot water softens the dates and makes it easier to blend the dates into a paste.

While the water is warming up, make sure all the pits and caps are removed and measure out the dates.

In the blender or food processor, add the dates and pour the hot water over the dates. If you prefer any optional add-ins, like vanilla extract or ground cinnamon add these to the blender at this time.

Once all the ingredients are in the blender, blend until smooth. Start at a low speed and gradually increase the speed to high. Use the plunger and scrape down the sides as needed.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 weeks.

    Equipment

A good quality high-performance blender or food processor is going to achieve the smoothest paste.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks or in the freezer for up to a year.

    FAQ

    Can date paste be frozen?

Yes, date paste can be frozen for later use. Freeze for up to one year. To avoid having to defrost more than you need, measure out the date paste in tablespoons and freeze it on a baking sheet. Once frozen throw it into a freezer-grade container or bag.

    Is date paste healthy?

Yes, date paste is a minimally processed sugar replacement made up of whole foods. Unlike highly processed sugars, like cane sugar, date paste is intact with vitamins and minerals, and fiber too.

    • 2 cups pitted dates 450-455 grams
    • 1 cup hot water
    • 1 tbsp vanilla extract optional
    • 1-2 tsp ground cinnamon optional

    Instructions

    PREP

    • In a small pot on the stove, boil the water.
    • While the water is warming up, make sure all the pits and caps are removed and measure out the dates.

    BLEND

    • Place the dates, hot water, and any add-ins (like vanilla, cinnamon) in the blender.
    • Once all the ingredients are ready to go in the blender, blend until smooth.
    • If need be, use your plunger or stop the blender and mix with a spoon, and blend.
    • Refrigerate.

    Notes

    • The hot water helps soften the dates and makes them easier to process. Feel free to follow the instructions in the recipe or instead soak the dates in water to soften them.
    • Look for dates that are still fresh and soft if possible. Dates that still have their pits are usually softer, all you just have to do is remove the pits and caps before blending.
